Everything you need to know
about getting to Auckland and Waiheke Island,
and where to stay for our special day.

Getting to Auckland

Most international visitors will fly into Auckland Airport (AKL), New Zealand's largest international gateway. From the airport, you have several options to reach Auckland city center including the SkyBus (most economical), shuttle services, Uber/taxis, or public transport. If you're planning on staying a while, we recommend hiring a car to get you around and out of the city. For interenational travellers, it's very important that you check visa requirements.

Auckland to Waiheke

Getting to Waiheke Island is easy and scenic via ferry. Regular passenger ferries run from Auckland's Downtown Ferry Terminal on Quay Street to Matiatia Wharf on Waiheke, taking 35-40 minutes. Ferries depart every 30-60 minutes throughout the day. If you're bringing a car, Sealink operates a car ferry service from Downtown Auckland to Kennedy Point on Waiheke (45 minutes) - advance booking is essential for the car ferry.

Getting Around Auckland

Auckland has an excellent public transport system including buses, trains, and ferries - all accessible with an AT HOP card. The city center is very walkable, especially areas like Viaduct Harbour, Queen Street, and Wynyard Quarter. For convenience, Uber and taxis are readily available, and there are also Lime scooters for short trips. If you prefer to rent a car, major rental companies operate from the airport and city, though parking in the city center can be expensive.

Getting Around Waiheke

Waiheke Island has regular bus services connecting the ferry terminal to all major destinations (your AT HOP card works here too!). There is no Uber or rideshare available on the island. For more flexibility, you can hire bikes, e-bikes, or scooters which can often be delivered to your accommodation. Many visitors enjoy organized wine tours or shuttle services that take the stress out of getting around. The island is also very walkable - it's about 25 minutes from Matiatia ferry terminal to Oneroa village, and most vineyards are within walking distance of each other.

Where to Stay

You have great options whether you stay in Auckland city or on Waiheke Island itself. Auckland city hotels put you close to restaurants, shopping, and the ferry terminal, with options ranging from luxury hotels like the Sofitel and Hilton to budget-friendly hostels. On Waiheke Island, you can choose from boutique lodges, vineyard accommodation, beachside resorts, or cozy Airbnbs. Staying on the island gives you more time to enjoy the relaxed island atmosphere and beautiful scenery.
